Google could rebrand Apple TV competitor Android TV to ‘Google TV’

9to5Google are today suggesting that Google will rename its smart television platform Android TV as Google TV, in a move that better separate the Android operating system from its big screen counterpart.

Android TV’s predecessor was called Google TV, before the company attempted to bring its mobile and TV operating systems closer together. The decision will change that again, taking it back to its original name.

It’s very unlikely that Google will rename Android, as it’s the most popular mobile operating system in the world, but we’ve seen other branding changes to services from Google recently – including the rename of Hangouts, to Google Chat.

It’s not known if the operating system will face a full rebrand or redesign, but it’s certainly a clever move that will make it closer to Apple TV and tvOS, which runs on Apple TV hardware.
