Apple acquires Dark Sky Weather

On March 31, 2020, Dark Sky Weather announced on its blog that Dark Sky was joining Apple. Dark Sky is currently ranked as the #1 weather app on the App Store.

Dark Sky Weather provides down-to-the-minute forecasts, “beautiful weather animations,” a time machine feature to explore weather in the past and future, and much more.

Our goal has always been to provide the world with the best weather information possible, to help as many people as we can stay dry and safe, and to do so in a way that respects your privacy.

There is no better place to accomplish these goals than at Apple. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to reach far more people, with far more impact, than we ever could alone.

The blog posts goes on to mention that the iOS app will still be available for purchase on the App Store, but it’s Android app has been removed for purchase and will be shut down on July 1, 2020. Subscribers who are still active at that time will receive a refund.

Dark Sky’s forecasts, maps, and embeds on its website will continue to function until July 1, 2020, at which point it will remain active in support of its API and iOS App customers.

Their API will continue to function until the end of 2021, at which point it will also be shut down. Dark Sky will no longer be accepting new signups for its API service.
