Apple TV+ competitor HBO Max launching in May 2020

Today, AT&T held an event at which it shared more detailed information regarding the upcoming subscription service, HBO Max. They stated that they new service will be launching in May 2020 for a monthly subscription fee of $14.99.

At launch, HBO Max will feature over 10,000 hours of movies and shows. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the service will include some familiar titles.

HBO Max will be filled with 10,000 hours of programming from across the media conglomerate’s divisions including TV hits like Friends, Big Bang Theory and South Park, Warner Bros. films like The Joker, the full HBO catalog and originals like Ansel Elgort drama Tokyo Vice, a Grease spinoff and a Gossip Girl sequel.

HBO Max releasing in May 2020 will be a premium subscription service priced at $14.99/month, but in 2021 AT&T plans to offer more flexible plans at a lower cost. These future pricing models will most likely be ad-supported in order to make up for the lower cost of the service.

The higher monthly price was expected, and WarnerMedia is hoping that the HBO branding will help justify why the streaming service is more expensive than others like Apple TV+ and Netflix.

Great news if you’re an existing HBO subscriber! HBO Max will be available free for you using your current subscription. What do you think of the new streaming service? Will it be better than others that currently exist like Netflix? Let us know on our social media and in the comments below.
