How to install the watchOS 7 public beta

On Monday, Apple released the first public beta of watchOS 7 to beta testers, a week after pushing the fourth developer beta. It’s now possible for anybody to try out watchOS 7 before it comes out to the public in September.

Before installing, there are two important things to note:

  1. You must be running the iOS 14 developer or public beta on your iPhone to install the watchOS 7 public beta, or you could brick your Apple Watch
  2. Once installed, there is no way to downgrade from watchOS 7 to an older version of the software. You’ll have to wait for the public release to launch, remove the profile, and update to the stable version.

watchOS 7 is compatible with Apple Watch Series 3, 4 and 5 and brings Sleep Tracking, Handwashing Reminders, watch face sharing, new types of workouts, new watch faces and other huge improvements.

  1. Sign in to Apple’s Public Beta Program website and tap ‘watchOS’
  2. Scroll down and tap ‘Enroll your Apple Watch’
  3. Tap the Download Profile link and in the message that appears, tap Allow
  4. Tap Allow, then Install, and enter your passcode
  5. Tap Allow in the next two screens and then tap Done
  6. In the Watch app, tap General > Software Update

Tap to Download & Install the latest watchOS Beta. You’ll need to make sure your Apple Watch has at least 50% charge and is connected to its charge to be able to install any available updates.

We don’t recommend installing watchOS beta updates as they usually have an impact on your Apple Watch’s battery life and performance. Apple will likely seed the final version of the software within the next month and half, so we’d advise waiting to install that.
