iPhone 12 Pro leak shows thinner bezels, smaller notch and iPad Pro-like design

iPhone 12 Pro Max schematics sourced by EverythingApplePro in collaboration with Max Weinbach are yet again revealing some major design changes to this year’s high-end iPhones.

The CADs show that the next iPhone will very likely sport a squared, flat design that we’ve seen from the iPhone 5s and iPad Pro. It will be thinner too, going from 8.1mm to 7.4mm (compared to the 11 Pro Max). Whilst this has been rumoured for years, the official CADs now confirm this is certainly likely to be the design basis for the iPhone 12 Pro & Pro Max.

However, it’s quite plausible that Apple has made changes to the design, as these date back to January, when renders are typically leaked. The leak is likely from a case or part manufacturer.

The front of the device looks very modern. Apple has shrunk the bezels by about 40% from 2.5mm to 1.5mm (again, this could change) and kept them even on each side. This alongside the smaller notch, which EverythingApplePro says isn’t finalised, and could well stay the same size as current models, brings a fresh new look to iPhone.

The Pro Max model is getting taller and larger, from 6.5″ to 6.7″. The power button has been moved downwards, and the SIM card tray has been moved to the opposite side, suggesting Apple is working on an internal redesign with new logic board and larger battery.

What’s very odd is the Smart Connector on the right-hand side of the iPhone. On the iPad, the Smart Connector lets you connect accessories like a keyboard. It’s quite unclear as to what this could mean for future iPhones, but it’s possible that Apple will let you connect third party keyboard cases or other accessories specifically made for the smaller body of the iPhone.

The rear camera bump will also feature a LiDAR sensor, but Apple could move it from the bottom right to the top right, and may have already made that decision in newer CADs. The camera bump will be thicker and the sensors won’t stick out as much, so, the overall size of the protruding bump will be the same.

Thicker antenna bands are also expected and seen in the images. This will likely allow for 5G cellular connectivity – the first iPhones to get it.

Keep in mind that these could likely change, but an iPad Pro like design and smaller notch is visibly being considered by Apple and it’s more than likely we’ll see similar designed iPhones when they launch in the Fall. No further details have been confirmed about the cheaper iPhone 12.
