Sonos launches Arc Soundbar with Dolby Atmos, AirPlay 2 and new app design

Sonos has launched a few new products today, including the Arc Soundbar, new subwoofer and Sonos Five Speakers. Alongside this, a new app for iPhone and Android has been teased, which works with the new devices.

The Sonos Arc replaces the 2013 Playbar, which received no updates since its launch. It will cost £799 and includes Dolby Atmos and AirPlay 2. Atmos allows for better placement of sound than traditional surround-sound and spreads it in a three-dimensional space. Alexa and Google Assistant support is also built in.

AirPlay 2 allows you to play audio from your iPhone, iPad or Mac through the Arc with no hassle. It’s now found on smart televisions, speakers and other devices, so it’s not surprising that Sonos has added it to the new products.

In June, Sonos will release a new operating system called S2, which will work on most of their recent products. Those that aren’t compatible will be treated as ‘legacy’ and won’t work due to their lack of memory and power.

A new app will also work hand-in-hand with S2 and provide easy access to your Sonos product’s settings and features. It will let you manage your music and keep your devices up to date with the latest “audio technologies for music and home theater”. The current app will be renamed to Sonos S1 Controller and will continue to work with products that don’t support S2.
