[Update: Confirmed] Project xCloud TestFlight beta shutting down today

Update 06/08: In a statement to The Verge, Microsoft has confirmed that the TestFlight preview has now ended and that the company is “focused on delivering cloud gaming as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to Android customers”.

Project xCloud is Microsoft’s game streaming service for Xbox games and is due to start rolling out to more countries publicly later this year. It’s available on Android and has been available on iOS – albeit in a very limited way.

Back in February, Microsoft released a Project xCloud preview app for iOS users, on TestFlight. However, only one build was ever released and that build will expire today – meaning users can no longer use the app on their iPhone or iPad.

And the tech giant wouldn’t have got very far anyway: Apple doesn’t allow game streaming apps in the App Store. This is why Google Stadia isn’t available and why Microsoft xCloud isn’t – and won’t be.

It’s clear that Microsoft and Apple haven’t found a solution, or are still working on one that will allow iOS users to safely stream their Xbox games with Project xCloud.
