WhatsApp Web dark theme in development – here’s how to enable it

Dark Mode is available on the WhatsApp apps for Android and iOS, but that’s it. WhatsApp now looks to be testing the feature on WhatsApp Web for desktop (first spotted by WABetaInfo) and it’s now possible for you to enable the experimental dark theme through a small tweak.

WhatsApp uses a similar theme to its Android app – not pitch black but more dark blue. Chat bubbles use a dark green and blue colour scheme, and the default chat background is a darker shade of blue.

It’s important to note that Dark Mode will eventually roll out to WhatsApp Web and Desktop (available on PC and Mac), but is currently being developed. The current solution is not permanent and will revert when you refresh your WhatsApp Web page.

  1. Log in to your account on WhatsApp Web (you may need a QR Code).
  2. Inside a chat window, right-click and select Inspect Element.
  3. In the console pane that appears, scroll to the top until you see the ‘body class=”web’ string.
  4. Double-click ‘web’ and replace it with ‘web dark’. Press Enter.
