A new Messages app is coming in macOS 10.16

9to5Mac have today understood, through iOS 14 code, that the Mac will be getting a new Messages app based on the iPhone and iPad versions. Apple will replace the current app with a new app based on Catalyst and iOS 14’s code.

Whilst iMessage for iOS has gained stickers, Memoji, reactions and effects, Messages for Mac has stayed very basic and seemingly abandoned by Apple for years. This import from iOS to macOS could change that significantly.

Catalyst technology means Apple can port the same feature set and similar interface of the Messages app for iOS onto the Mac and update them both at the same time.

Our concept, pictured above, shows how Apple could implement a Messages app on the Mac. It’s based on the iPad version, with major changes in the buttons and icon positions. For example, rather than clicking on the contact name to expand a list of options, those are located to the left of the window.

We’ll expect the Messages app to come to macOS with the next release, due this June. It’s likely we’ll see major new features in iMessage for all platforms, too.
