Epic Games brings 90fps to Fortnite on the OnePlus 8 series

OnePlus has today revealed a partnership with Epic Games that will enable Fortnite Mobile to be played in 90fps on the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, released earlier this year.

The OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro both have 120Hz displays and are now capable of playing Fortnite at 90 frames per second (not 120 fps at the moment). They’re the only mobile devices that can run Fortnite at such as high refresh rate smoothly – aside from the iPad Pro at 120fps.

It’s seemingly due to the Snapdragon 865 chip and changes made by Epic Games. One niggle is the change in quality of the graphics – quality settings drop to ‘low’ with 90fps enabled. This will change how textures and assets are displayed, and is likely required so the 865 chip can cope with the additional strain when playing the game. The iPad Pro, on the other hand, isn’t affected by the higher refresh rate but has a significantly more powerful chip.

The OnePlus 7 and 7T will not support the 90fps mode, despite having a 90Hz display. It’s also unclear if Epic Games plans to bring the feature to more Android devices, but is likely to do so due to the amount of new devices adopting higher refresh rate displays.
